Manchester Extended Primary Eyecare Services


Urgent Eye Conditions Service (CUES)

If your practice does not participate in this service, then eye problems such as:

  • • Red or painful eye or eyelids
    • Recently occurring flashes and floaters
    • Recent and sudden loss of vision
    • Foreign body in the eye

should be referred to one of the CUES accredited optometry practices.

Cataract Referrals

All cataracts referrals should be directed through the enhanced service pathway to ensure that the patient is counselled on the risks and benefits, meets the referral criteria and requires and wants surgery. If you do not participate in the service or are out of the area, please send the patient to one of the accredited optometrists with a copy of the referral letter.

Post-operative Cataract Care

Under this arrangement the optometrist performs the final check-up after cataract surgery with reporting through Optomanager.

Glaucoma Repeat Readings Service

If you have a patient with raised pressure only, and you do not take part on the extended service, you should refer them to the GERS service. More informarion and a list of practices is available on the following website:

Glaucoma Enhanced Referrals Service (GERS)

Where there are signs of glaucoma, with or without raised IOP, Manchester patients should be referred directly to the GERS service. You can search for a local practice providing the service on the following website:

Patients from areas outside Manchester should be referred according to their area’s protocol.

Practices outside the area should refer Manchester patients to GERS.
